As good fortune would have it, an August 2001 Post article about attaching defibrillators to automobile computers caught the eye of a health-conscious and influential woman. The reader's name was Patricia Moore, and she showed the article to her husband, Tom, who happens to be vice president of DaimlerChrysler's Liberty and Technical Affairs--a research and engineering design arm of the company.
Her persistence persuaded him to look into the matter. DaimlerChrysler set up a focus study to find out consumer interest in equipping cars with defibrillators. The research found that women were more interested than men and that men over 50 were more interested than younger men.
The first model of such a "defibrillator car" was shown last June in Germany. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Concierge concept car equipped with a defibrillator will be introduced to American audiences in October 2002 at auto shows in Detroit.
In addition to making motorists safer, imagine the benefit that mass production would have on the cost of defibrillators!
We thank Mrs. Moore and her husband for picking up on the concept.
