Snowflakes are amazing to look at. But when you catch one on your finger, it melts before your eyes. Now you can make this easy “snow screen” that keeps them from melting too quickly!
You Will Need:
• Craft glue
• A piece of heavy cardboard
• Black felt (the same size as the cardboard)
• Magnifying glass (optional)
You Will Do:
1. Run a ribbon of glue around the edges of the cardboard.
2. Place the felt on top of the cardboard, pressing the glued edges together. Weigh down the edges with a few large books until the glue dries. Remove the books.
3. On a snowy day, use your snow screen to catch some falling flakes. While still outdoors, look at them through your magnifying glass.
What Will Happen:
The snowflakes will remain frozen long enough for you to study them.
Why?
When you catch a snowflake on your hand, it takes in your body heat and melts very quickly. But when snowflakes land on the snow screen, they are held up by tiny fibers in the felt which allow cold air to flow underneath them as well as above them. This keeps the flakes frozen long enough to study them with the magnifying glass. The black background will also make it easy to see each tiny detail.
