Lydia's Play-Inside Adventure

One rainy, play-inside day, while Mama was rocking baby Jim, Lydia pulled out her big box of blocks. When she dumped them on the rug, the blocks became fish in the sea. And the box, a ship she piloted.

"My Bonnie lies over the ocean," Lydia sang as she sailed over the rocking, rolling waves. Up and down she sailed until, ahoy, she spotted Bouncy Bed Island.

"I think I will explore," said Lydia, bobbing and bouncing. She almost ended up in the sea.

When at last the boat was firmly beached, Lydia spotted a cave, deep and dark, nearby. She poked her head inside and heard a dinosaur roar. "Aargh! Aargh!" Lydia roared right back. The dinosaur didn't dare to poke its nose outside.

Then, as Lydia turned away, she found a turtle shell upon her back. So, slowly and carefully, she moved back toward the beach. And when she got there, a plane, just Lydia's size, awaited her.

She jumped into the cockpit and took off. She flew so high that the houses below looked like tiny blocks.

And when she landed safely upon her rug, she found a desk. There she put her telephone, and began to think about her adventures.

But then there was a knock on the door. "Put away your blocks," Mama said. "Baby Jim is in his bed. It's time to tell a story. Which one shall it be?"

Lydia tossed her blocks into the box. She hurried out to the couch. "I want the story to be about me," she said.

"Once upon a time," said Mama, "there was a little girl named Lydia. She had a big box of blocks and a wonderful imagination."
